The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

As any significant honors show approaches, you'll find a clamor for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
