A recent study reveals that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such treatments must be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
