Larian Studios Unveil a Latest Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG Yet

The speculation about The Game Awards was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely designing a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, players can get ready for a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
