Intense Gales Leave Numerous Homes In the Dark in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Residents encouraged to stay indoors as severe gales lash the region.

Intense winds hitting velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in approximately 90,000 properties without power and forced officials to halt more than 100 air travel services, based on regional news sources.

The gales are impacting the complete South Island and southern sections of the northern region, as stated by the country's meteorological service.

The nation's agencies have released infrequent severe gust advisories - the most severe warning - in key areas such as these major districts.

Residents have been advised to remain inside, avoid travel, and get ready for additional utility disruptions.

Broad Impact and Emergency Measures

The power cut appears to be affecting households mainly in the southern region, while authorities state that power was being slowly brought back.

Regional news have indicated that in various locations roofs have been ripped off houses, while power lines and trees have been toppled by the winds.

In Wellington, a person was killed after being struck by a wooden fragment at a popular trail walking spot on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a woman was swept into approaching vehicles on a street by a powerful blast, in a moment that was filmed in a viral dashcam video.

Flights in and out of the metropolis have been cancelled due to the weather, and some roads and libraries are also closed.

At the same time local leaders have issued a crisis declaration, to support recovery activities.

Strike Action During Severe Conditions

The wild winds on today occur while many of school staff, physicians and civil servants take part in what has been called a "mega strike", requesting higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

However the severe conditions has pressured them to alter certain arrangements, with some outdoor rallies moved indoors or cancelled.

Comparable winds are also sweeping Australia, ushering in a heatwave to the country's outback.

Agencies have declared burning restrictions for fear of bushfires.
