EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal news:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the action was “another example” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the new year, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
