An Kindness of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Gentleman I Had Just Met Assisted Me Land the Role That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my travel mate was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had planned a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a large ten-floor structure on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at an Ivy League institution. He wanted to know what I did for a living, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I should apply for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that night. The engineering student approached me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but immediately told my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she declared: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his name, but his selfless gesture changed my life in so many ways. I lacked the bravery or self-belief to reach out at an elite institution and ask for a job. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a job in Zurich where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
